Bathtub Refinishing Safety

Bathtub refinishing is a highly specialized craft that requires proper safety equipment and materials rated safe by the EPA and FDA. The most professional, highly rated refinishing companies employ trained technicians who follow safety best practices.

Bath and tile resurfacing projects are completed with little to no danger of hazardous incidents as long as industry-wide safety measures are practiced.

One main precaution involves the fumes and odors that occur during the process of refinishing bath, sink, and shower surfaces. Technicians must ensure that they have adequate local exhaust ventilation (LEV) or means of keeping an active airflow. Technicians must prevent the buildup of vapors, fumes, and odors as they may pose a health risk, especially if those fumes are emitted from materials, not EPA and FDA approved.

The following list details important bathtub refinishing safety guidelines:

1. Technicians should wear protective clothing, eyewear, gloves, and a full organic vapor gas respirator mask to minimize direct contact with stripping agents and materials.

2. Technicians should avoid leaning into a bathtub or shower enclosure, and instead use long-handled tools to minimize direct facial exposure to fumes.

3. Avoid the use of materials that contain methylene chloride. If methylene chloride is used, then avoid spraying it on the worksite.

4. Companies should provide detailed and updated training for all technicians and perform routine checks to ensure technicians follow safety regulations.

5. Setup a fan, exhaust hood, or duct system to increase fresh airflow and provide ventilation throughout the worksite.
